Rohit Sharma smashes record and goes past Sachin Tendulkar
In last evening’s encounter between India and the West Indies – The Windies got off to a flying start in the first innings with the bat and scored a competitive enough total of 322 against the Indian bowling line up.
Jason Holder’s men had got the momentum to cause an upset in the first One Day International at the Guwahati. Debutant Oshane Thomas managed to pile more pressure on the Indians by taking the early wicket of in-form batsman Shikhar Dhawan for 4.
But that was the last time the Windies camp were seen rejoicing as captain Virat Kohli and vice captian Rohit Sharma rocked the West Indies bowlers with quick counter attacking runs and an array of shots that lead to boundaries and monumental sixes – particularly by the ‘Hit – Man’ Rohit Sharma.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma accumulated and thumped the Windies with a 246 run partnership for the second wicket – which was also the second best partnership for a second wicket in world cricket while chasing.
Rohit Sharma’s 152* of a 117 deliveries made him surpass the great Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar in terms of most number of 150 plus scores with a total tally of six. Sharma had also gone beyond the likes of David Warner, Hashim Amla, Chris Gayle and Sanath Jayasurya in the process.
The knock from both Kohli and Rohit Sharma made the men in blue achieve the target of 323 with 8 wickets in hand, while 8 overs still remained. Ambati Raydu’s late cameo of 22 in 26 balls was enough to guide India to a comfortable win in the first game of the five match series.
Virat Kohli was awarded the player of the match award for his quick fire 140 of just a 107 balls. The second ODI will be hosted at Vishakhapatnam on the October 24.
