Don't know what's a par score against India - Jason Holder
The Windies started the first ODI match against Indian on a good note. Shimron Hetmyer and Kieran Powell played brilliant knocks and led the team to a gigantic total of 322 in 50 overs. But it was the sheer dominance of India batsmen that proved to be lethal for the Jason Holder-led side.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma scored blistering centuries and India chased down the target of 323 with as many as 47 balls to spare.
Overwhelmed by the performances of Kohli and Rohit, the West Indies skipper Jason Holder confessed that no team knows what’s the par score against a team like India.
“You never know what’s a par score against a strong team like India. In hindsight, 320 was probably a par score. At the half-way stage, I thought we had a par score but we were probably 30-40 runs short,” Holder shared.
But at the same time Holder also said that there are a lot of positives to be taken from his team’s performance in the game.
Holder said, “I am not too disheartened by the performance. I thought the batters really put up their hands in this innings. Probably on this track, we were 30-40 runs short. I was pleased to get at least 300 because we have been faulted in the past for not getting up to 300 and maybe not batted a lot of overs as well. So it was pleasing to see the guys apply themselves. We were losing wickets at crucial times, but it was good that we batted out all the overs and we got past 300.”
Kohli & Rohit were in sublime touch yesterday and built a strong partnership of 246 to take India home. With both the batsmen in full-flow, Holder shared that the only way to let them stop making runs is to get them out because till the time they are at the crease yo can’t stop them of scoring runs.
“They are quality players and they will hit everything that will come up to them. I think we gave away too many boundaries. We went for the wickets and we were able to get Shikhar Dhawan early but at the end of the day both Kohli and Sharma played outstanding innings,” Holder concluded.
