Bajrang assured of medal, Sumit loses bout for bronze
India’s ace wrestler lived up to the nation’s expectations and booked a berth in the finals of the 65 kg Freestyle event at the ongoing World Wrestling Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Bajrang who is leading India’s challenge at the World event, cruised through his bouts without creating much fuss. In the first round he faced lanky Roman Asharin of Hungary and won the bout with a convincing margin of 9-4. Though, the Hungarian had immense crowd support but even that didn’t help him up his game against the Indian. In the second round, he met Korean wrestler Seungchul Lee who was way too defensive in his approach and handed an easy victory to the Indian with a margin of 4-0.
In the quarter-final Bajrang was up against Mongolian Tulga Tumur Ochir who gave a tough time to the Indian. Bajrang also conceded a point for passive play during the bout, which resulted in him getting under pressure at one stage but he rose to the occasion in the last 30 seconds to pull it off with a score of 5-3. Though, the Indian was looking a little tired in the Semi final, his last bout for the day, against the 17th seed Alejandro Enrique Valdes Tobier from Cuba. He managed to hold his fort and won the game with a thin margin of 4-3.
With this win, he has bettered his show at the World Championships when he won the bronze medal in the 2013 championships.
Sumit returns empty handed
In the 125 kg freestyle, wrestler Sumit who was the lone Indian to reach the semis on Day 1, failed to win the Bronze in the repechage. He was beaten convincingly by No.1 seed Nicholas Edward Gwiazdowski 7-2.
Sandeep, Sachin, Deepak fail to impress
Other wrestlers in the fray during the day failed to impress and bowed out without putting up a creditable performance.
Sandeep Tomar, (57kg, freestyle), got past the first round with a technical superiority of 10-0 over his competitor from Gautemala. But in the second round, he got unlucky against Azerbaijan’s Giorgi Edisherashvili in moving to the next round. Both the wrestlers were tied at 2 points each but the Azebaijan wrestler won it because he earned the points with a takedown. In the 79 kg freestyle category Sachin Rathi surrendered meekly against Mongolian wrestler Unurbat Purevjav with a score line of 1-13. He lost with a technical superioty from his opponent. Deepak (92kg, freestyle) was no match for his Ukrainian competitor, who won against the Indian with a 4-0 margin.
All three wrestlers were knocked out and failed to make it to the repechage round.
