Crystal Palace 0-2 Southampton | Match Report
Southampton registered their first win of the 2018-19 Premier League season with a 2-0 scoreline against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Danny Ings slotted in his second Premier League goal of the season in the 47th minute before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's injury-time finish gave manager Mark Hughes the all-important three points.
"The last two weeks, since the Everton defeat, I've seen a real purpose to everything we have done in terms of application and a desire to get points on the board," said Hughes after the match.
"We were excellent today. We got our noses in front but we made it nervous towards the end. The penalty miss put us on edge and we just needed to calm ourselves down after that."
Crystal Palace lost every single fixture that Wilfried Zaha missed through injury in the top flight last season, all nine of them, and Roy Hodgson's side continued that regrettable form this Saturday also.
In Zaha's absence, summer signing Jordan Ayew was handed his first appearance, to start alongside Christian Benteke.
"I don't quite know what I can do about it until such a time we play a game without Wilf and win," Hodgson said of that sorry statistic hanging around like a bad smell.
"It's a fact. Again he didn't play today and again we didn't win. It's a pure fact that we have to learn to live with."
