Dale Steyn justifies ball tampering incident

Dale Steyn justifies ball tampering incident

The leading wicket taker of South African cricket – Dale Steyn has come to the defense of The penalized Aussies – Cmaron Bancroft,  David Warner, and Steve Smith for the infamous ball tampering incident that shook the cricket fraternity earlier this year.

In spite of being an active member of the South African cricket team for the past decade or so, Steyn has expressed, that the action taken by the three Aussies was “ a cry for help “

Speaking more into detail the pacer with 422 scalps to his name spoke about how fast bowling and reverse swing is becoming a dying art due to the stringent rules and regulations set by the governing body.

"It's obviously not on, but if you think about it, it's almost like a cry for help. We need to do something," Steyn said.

"There's so much in favor of batsmen these days. Fields are small, two new balls, power plays, bats have got bigger than they used to be, the list can go on.

"You bowl a no ball and it's a free hit. But I have never seen a rule change that favors the bowler."

"It's a big plea and it would be a sad day to see (reverse swing) disappear," Steyn said.

"I grew up watching (Wasim) Akram, I grew up watching Waqar (Younis) and all these geniuses run in and reverse swing the ball.

"And you just don't see it today. What inspiration will other fast bowlers have if they don't have anybody to inspire them to become fast bowlers.”

"You might as well put a bowling machine there and everyone try and become a batter."

The incident took place in the third test between South Africa and Australia, while the four match series was poised at 1-1. South African batsmen were running away with the game with a healthy lead of 100 runs for the loss of a single wicket. That’s where the controversial moment took place when Bancroft was seen rubbing sandpaper on the ball for it to reverse and was caught on the big screen while doing so. Steve Smith and David Warner took responsibility for the actions of Bancroft and were handed a year’s ban to International cricket, while Bancroft was given 9 months off international cricket by Cricket Australia.
