Sports Ministry clears 325-member Indian contingent for CWG 2018

Sports Ministry clears 325-member Indian contingent for CWG 2018

The Sports Ministry of India has confirmed India’s contingent for the 2018 Commonwealth Games which is going to be held at Gold Coast City in Australia from April 4 to 15, which comprises 325 members (221 athletes, 58 coaches, 17 doctors and physiotherapists, seven managers and 22 other officials).

If we talk about individual disciplines then there are, Athletics and Shooting has the maximum representation with 31 and 27 participants respectively, while weightlifting and wrestling will see 16 and 12 contenders, respectively stepping up to the challenge.

On the other hand, 10 Indian shuttlers will vie for supremacy at the quadrennial event, comprising the likes of World No. 2 Kidambi Srikanth and No. 3 PV Sindhu (who will be India's flag bearer at the opening ceremony of CWG 2018).

Sports Ministry reported in media that, "Expenditure of the above-cited Indian contingent will be borne by SAI from funds made available to it under the Scheme of Assistance to NSFs as per Annexure II. SAI will nominate a nodal officer for this activity that will be responsible to coordinate with the MYAS, NADA, IOA, Balmer, and Lawrie etc."

They further added to their statements that, "The Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Sports Authority of India, (SAI), National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), and concerned NSFs may take appropriate measures for conducting the dope tests. IOA may also ensure the medical fitness of the team/individual sportspersons prior to their departure."

If we put eyes on previous year’s presence of extra- officials, then the presence of 'extra officials' in the Commonwealth Games-bound Indian contingent had become a major flashpoint between the sports ministry and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

The IOA then on Thursday had said that Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore had assured it to have a re-look at government's policy of not clearing 'extra officials' for the upcoming Games in Gold Coast.

Therefore, this assurance came after the IOA President Narinder Batra slammed the ministry for raising "unnecessary issues" about the Commonwealth Games contingent, asking it to apply the same standards of probity for its own bureaucrats.
